Latest Trend in Health Care Web Sites is Targeting Vertical Markets

Austin, TEXAS – May 13, 2000 – Health care web sites are a dime a dozen. We find ourselves in a time characterized by broad-based web sites that cover as much ground as possible and are fueled by venture capital and investor relations, rather than sound content and in-depth information. One company based in Austin, Texas, however, is not only taking the non-traditional approach, but making it succeed. After watching its flagship web site, OBGYN.net, emerge as the world's largest specialty web site dedicated to women's health care, MediSpecialty.com announces the launch of its latest vertical health care portal, otohns.net.

The new web site focuses on otolaryngology, or head and neck surgery, and has already enlisted more than 40 of the world's top physicians on its editorial advisory board. Like OBGYN.net, otohns.net will offer physician-reviewed content and a variety of forums. Otolaryngology involves the study of the ears, nose, and throat, and covers many common medical conditions and areas, such as allergies, sleep disorders and reconstructive facial surgery. As a vertically-oriented web site, the content of otohns.net will be limited to otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. Unlike MediSpecialty.com's other web sites, otohns.net will be geared primarily toward physicians, medical specialists and industry professionals, but not patients. Extensive information will be available, including direct access to such resources as Medline Knowledge Finder's search engine. The launch date coincides with the 2000 Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meeting (COSM), which kicked off the weekend of May 13-14 in Orlando, Florida.

MediSpecialty.com (formerly Elecomm) was founded in 1996 as the parent company of OBGYN.net. MediSpeciality.com provides services for vertical healthcare communities, medical professionals, and their patients by offering a customized assessment of needs and delivering a comprehensive road map for its clients to follow. Even at the early age of the Internet and World Wide Web, the company's philosophy has been to provide in-depth information to a selected group of health care professionals in a manner that since has been labeled vertical marketing. MediSpecialty.com's belief has always been that professionals – and ultimately, as they have learned, consumers – come to the Internet seeking detailed information, not resources of a superficial nature. Providing such content has always been the mission of MediSpecialty.com, even when those on Wall Street suggested it was not the financially prudent approach. It has since proven to be the recipe for international reader satisfaction and long-term success.
